So the first week of Glamour Camp has ended. It was surely a bittersweet moment. On one hand I was sad to see them go. On the other hand, I am so proud of the progress they made, in just one week.
Our journey together started on Monday morning, bright and early. The girls arrived, we introduced ourselves, and the fun began. We started the day with some fun games, and activities to get to know each other. Then it was time for the girls to meet their student mentors! Camp started off with hair care, and styling. The student mentors taught their campers proper hair care, for their specific hair types, before giving them a relaxing shampoo. Then they blowdried, and styled their hair, making them feel glamorous!
If you know someone ages 12-17 who would be interested in this experience, please visit www.benes.edu/glamour-camp or call the campus closest to you.

This month we recognize, and celebrate Buffy Griffin, as our student of the month, for our New Port Richey campus!
Buffy has a true passion for cosmetology. She is regularly seen in mini classes, to perfect her skills. Her attendance, and grades, are both above average! Need someone to cheer you up, and put a smile on your face? Buffy can definitely take care of that!
We asked Buffy a few questions, and here is what she had to say!
What are your career goals?
As far as my career goals go, I would love to own a full service salon, with a restaurant.
What are your educational goals after Bene’s?
After completing my education at Bene's, I plan on working in a salon to build up more clientele, experience, knowledge, and the finances necessary for me to invest in my own full service salon.
What do you see yourself doing in the next 5-10 years?
Between the years of 2021 - 2026 I will be the enthusiastic owner of my full service salon, Jazzy's, featuring Party In Your Mouth restaurant, doing what I love and enjoy doing making others happy and full while making them feel good about themselves!
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
In my free time I enjoy family time, cooking, baking, grilling, going to the beach, park, mall, relaxing on the couch watching a movie, with my four daughters, and fiance', and our dog Sandy.
What is your favorite thing about school?
I enjoy every moment at Bene's, it does not feel like school when I am there, because I really love what I do, It is an opportunity for me, to gain knowledge, to collaborate with my craft, so I can shine bright when I move forward in life.
It’s never easy to choose our featured employees, because everyone at Bene’s is a part of something bigger, a community of instructors, and staff. A family, that guides, and supports each and every student. This month we are featuring some hard working, multi talented instructors. Mr Jimmie Rodgers, from Brooksville, and Ms Jessica Martinez, from Spring Hill.
Both Jimmie, and Jessica, impress us daily. With their willingness to jump in, and help team members, and students. Not only with one category, but multiple. Mr Jimmie is a cosmetologist, who has experience in opening and running salons, and works as Brookvilles night time nail instructor. While Jessica has worked for other schools, as well as thriving as a stylist, she is a cosmetology instructor, but does wonders covering shifts and holding specialty classes throughout multiple departments. Both Jessica, and Jimmie, prove to us that they are valuable instructors, and more importantly, they prove it to their students, each and every day.
We asked them some questions, to get to know a little more about them. Here is what they had to say.
Us -Tell me about some of the people you’ve met while working at Bene’s Career Academy?
Jimmie - I have met all types of people.. The staff, the students.... clients... I am very passionate about teaching.... I would have to say the students have had a huge impact on me. If I stop and think about it, I get teary eyed.. My students from my first class are just about to graduate. I get emotional when I think about them going on and pursuing a professional career.. as I once did myself..
Us - What might our students be surprised to know about you?
Jimmie - Once I lived in Alaska.... yep... Alaska.. It was cold. Yes it was dark for part of the year, and yes it was daylight all day for part of the year.. My father help build the Alaska Pipeline.. I visited the North Pole and seen Santa's House.. Sometimes at night the family and I would go to the local airport and watch the jets land and take off for entertainment.. And the Northern Lights are very cool.. A real must see and do.. So place it on your bucket-list.
Us - What do you do when you aren’t working?
Jimmie - When I am not working at Bene's, I enjoy being on or in the water.. My family has several boats so with the Florida weather, we can just about go year round. I love the beach too.. I like to travel and see new places.. I like to sing karaoke too. Or shall I say I like to try... lol... I am a native Floridian, so i have lots of friends and family here.. I enjoy bbq's and family functions a lot, and a good birthday party seems to always be on my calendar.
Us - Tell me about someone who has influenced your decision to work with Bene’s Career Academy?
Jessica - This all became possible, because of Rachel Sollazzo, She called me and expressed how much I would love this school, and wanted me to work as an educator for Bene's. I was living in Tampa Fl at the time as a Representative for Babyliss Pro/ Argan Color. I am so thankful to Rachel as well As the Bene's family for accepting me.
Us - What would you say are some of your strongest beliefs about the industry we are in and your specific department?
Jessica - I'm such a passionate cosmetologist( to a fault). I believe that as a stylist you have to always be creative, trendy and be confident. I work in different departments, I’ve been in Basic ,clinic floor and now Nails department. Passion, ,Discipline, and imagination, can take you far in this career path.
Us - When you last participated in one of Bene’s special events (ex: mothers day, rope center event, light up ridge manor), how did that make you feel?
Jessica - I've participated in a lot of events and i have to say that I’m humbled. I love giving back and I'm amazed that I work for such a generous man that cares about giving back to the community as well as his students. Very thankful, blessed to be a part of this Clan.
Thank you both, for being such amazing instructors, and team members!
This month we started a new ritual, in our Brooksville campus. It’s very exciting to get to be a part of something so special to those involved. We took a day and spent it at Eckerd, a center for troubled youth.
We provided the young men there with complimentary haircuts. They were all overjoyed, as this is something they didn’t have access to previously.
Sometimes, a simple gesture, such as a haircut, can change someone's entire mood. Sometimes, it can even help with their mindset. A feeling of being put together, and cared for, is something these young men haven’t always had. For us to be able to make them feel good, not only about themselves, but about the world around them, is a reward in itself.
We will be visiting Eckerd once a month, from now on. This way we are able to reach out, and possibly even inspire change. Who knows, maybe some of them will grow up to be barbers, or massage therapists!

This month, we were honored to have guests, from The Arc Nature Coast visit us, in New Port Richey, and Spring Hill. The Arc Nature Coast is a non-profit, charitable organization privileged to provide supports for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Bene's Career Academy actively participates in providing beauty and wellness services through charitable foundations and community outreach to ensure that our students gain not only a knowledge of their craft but also to be generous and have good values.
Students at each campus performed haircuts, and manicures for their guests. This made so many people feel happy, and confident. Mr and Mrs Bene even came out to sit with some of our guests. They spoke about the different careers that are available in the beauty industry, as well as the interests of our guests, and their everyday lives. It was a great thing to be a part of, the joy in that room was contagious.
We are looking forward to seeing some more guests next month, as we will be inviting The Arc Nature Coast to visit us, on a regular basis.

We are so excited, to be offering our new career pathways program! Since we began, at the beginning of June, we have had 18 potential students come to us, for testing. Out of those 18 people, 12 have already passed the ATB test, and are ready to begin their journey. This means that they are now able to start the program of their choice, and in less than a year, they will be licensed professionals, with a GED. How wonderful is that?
For those who didn't get to see our article last month, our new program offers a pathway to success, by providing an opportunity for people to obtain a professional license, and a GED in one place. This hasn't always been an option, but our legislation in Florida has changed, and now it is easier than ever to get a quality professional education, regardless of any previous academic struggles. Many people find hardship in obtaining a high school diploma. Maybe you weren't present enough as a teenager , or the learning environment did not meet your educational needs. We are all different, we learn different, we go through different struggles. But we all deserve success. To have a life where we not only survive, but truly live.
The goal here is to help people who have previously been unable to attain these goals. To provide a nurturing, structured, environment, with instructors that are able to cater to the individuals personal learning style. With small class sizes, regular start dates, several financial aid options, and flexible options for scheduling, students are able to get their education in a way that suits their lifestyle, with a team that supports and guides each student.
We're truly proud, to be able to offer this new program. To be able to provide this safe place, for students to learn and grow, and now it can be offered to even more people than before. Now the hundreds of students that were unable to enroll last year, can come back. And we can help them achieve their dreams!
Do you know someone that could benefit from this program? Maybe YOU should come see us! Bene's Career Academy has campus' in Brooksville, Spring Hill, and New Port Richey. Offering hands on training, in Cosmetology, Barbering, Skin Care, Nail Tech, Massage Therapy, and Instructor training. Contact our admissions office by calling toll free to (866) 282-2383 or visit us online at www.benes.edu for more information.
It's a wonderful moment when a student is so inspired by their education, that they want to be a part of the teaching experience. At Bene's we are fortunate to be able to offer an Instructor Training course for those students, and lucky enough to keep some of them as our very own instructors. This month we would like to congratulate Claudia Fernandez, from our Spring Hill campus, and Diane Davis, from our New Port Richey campus, for being exceptional students, during their time learning at Bene's, as well as outstanding instructors today.
Claudia began her journey at Bene’s as a cosmetology student. She was an exceptional student, despite the language barrier. Her eagerness to learn, and develop not only her technical skills, but her language skills as well, is truly inspirational. Claudia has a background in teaching, outside of the beauty industry, and an ability to engage her students in a way that is beyond compare.
When asked “What has been the best thing to happen to you since you started at Bene’s?” She replied with “The satisfaction I feel on graduation day”. How wonderful is it, that her best memory is the accomplishment of her students? We think it’s another indication of how exceptional Claudia really is. Claudia recalls the memory of her first student, “I remember the excitement of my first student Jessica, when she realized she excelled at skin care, due to my teachings.” Jessica was not the only one excited, you could see the joy on Claudia's face, the moment she realized that she had inspired that young woman.
We spoke about what she does outside of school, and learned that her passion is being passed on to her daughter, “What I do when I am not working, is take care of my amazing daughter, who is interested in a career in the beauty industry, because of my passion for my job at Bene's.”
You are an inspiration Claudia, and we are overjoyed to have you on our team. Thank you for being you!
We asked Diane some questions, so that we can all get to know her a little better. And here is what she had to say.
Tell me how you first got involved with Bene's Career Academy?
“When my family made the decision, last July 2015, to move to the state of Florida, I decided that it was time for me to advance my career and chose on becoming an Instructor. I actually researched Bene's and was happy to see that there was a Certification Program for Instructor Training. I came into the school, with my resume, and decided to enroll. My journey started September 2015, during the day, part-time...then, quickly advanced to nights, full-time. I completed my Instructor Training Program, 600 hours, earlier than expected, but I was determined and knew this is where I belonged. My love for my cosmetology profession has guided me to where I am today...teaching future cosmetologist and guiding them in the right direction.”
Tell me about someone who has influenced your decision to work with Bene's?
“There is more than one that has influenced me...to be honest. I can go all the way back to when I was in Cosmetology school. My school was a Pivot Point School, and I was totally drawn to both my Core I and Core II Instructors. Darlene Williams was my first Instructor, very firm and organized, and Katrina Smith was my second...very laid-back and chill. Combined, they have both been instilled in my head! Here at Bene's... who doesn't influence me! Ms.Michele Arends, Mr. Greg Edwards, and Ms. Lori Bryant...we all influence each other! I believe that wholeheartedly. We wouldn't be doing what we're doing without positive influence from each other.”
What might our students be surprised to know about you?
“I'm pretty much an open book, anyone who's met me knows that. I'm a rather humble person, and it tends to be very difficult for me to talk about myself. With that being said, here goes!! I was quite the student when I was in Cosmetology School. I graduated Cosmetology school with a GPA of 3.96, perfect attendance minus ONE day (due to a blizzard), graduated 3-weeks early, and received the Graduate of the Year Award, Marketing and Sales Award, and Most Determined Award. I turned the big "4-0" in cosmetology school, and I was hired by a salon BEFORE I even took my state board in Illinois.
I'm a HUGE sports fanatic, and I'm a die-hard Chicago Fan...Bears, Blackhawks, and Cubs. My husband and I will be celebrating our 25th Anniversary in October, and we have four children...Melanie-19yrs, Charles-15yrs, and twin girls, Meghan and Lauren-14yrs. We also have a 7-yr. old chocolate Lab...her name is "Disney." “
What do you do when you aren't working?
“Since I'm so new to the State of Florida, I tend to spend most of my time with my family. My oldest daughter just returned home from college in Texas, my son is involved in hockey, my twins just kind of "hangout" and my husband and I enjoy watching his cooking shows and our sports when we can.”
You are a wonderful instructor Diane, and we couldn't be happier that you choose to be on our team. Thank you.
